COOLCAT OF THE WEEK- DIZZY GILLESPIE 5/26/13
American jazz trumpeter and composer, Dizzy Gillespie with his “bent” trumpet.
cool storytime:
The origins of this unusual trumpet are unknown. However my personal favorite is that it resulted from an accident when dancers fell on it on stage while it was just innocently on a trumpet stand in 1953. Dizzy still played that night and had a great performance. He got he trumpet fixed the very next day. We he got it back he realized that it didn’t sound the same. The bend in his trumpet created a new tone that really struck Dizzy’s fancy. So, he rebent his trumpet and kept it like that for the rest of his jazz career.

Dexter Gordon

Very cool 1971 documentary footage of Dexter Gordon warming up and then taking the stage at the Montmartre in Copenhagen to play “Those Were The Days” with Kenny Drew. This was around the time that Mary Hopkins had a hit resurrecting this old tune for Apple Records. Copenhagen was Dexter’s town of choice when he settled in Europe and he loved the people, the musicians and the Montmartre.
